Alexey Pajitnov
Alexey Leonidovich Pajitnov is the computer engineer and game designer best known as the creator of Tetris. He developed the first playable version of Tetris in 1984 at the Dorodnitsyn Computing Centre of the Academy of Sciences in Moscow while exploring recreational mathematics and computer graphics.
Creating Tetris
Inspired by pentomino puzzles and a love for elegant problem solving, Pajitnov designed a falling-block game that challenged players to arrange tetrominoes to complete lines. The prototype spread quickly among colleagues, then across the Eastern Bloc, and within a few years became a worldwide phenomenon.
Later career
In the 1990s, Pajitnov moved to the United States and worked at Microsoft on various puzzle and casual games. He later co-founded The Tetris Company to manage and license the Tetris brand globally, ensuring consistent quality and bringing the game to new platforms.
Legacy
Tetris is frequently cited as one of the most influential video games of all time. Pajitnov’s design principles—clarity, depth, and replayability—continue to influence puzzle game design to this day.
